BURLA: The Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) A N Sahay on Sunday appealed to the trade union members to call-off the ensuing strike demanding `25,000 towards performance linked reward (PLR), bonus and ex-gratia payments. The five Central trade unions, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, BMS and CITU have called for a strike at all Coal India Limited establishments on Monday if CIL management fails to pay.In his appeal, Sahay said the company recorded a marginal growth in the last financial year and a negative growth of -3.9 per cent in the current financial year. Despite poor returns, the company has paid its employees `17,000 as PLR in 2010-11 to boost their morale, Sahay added. With the company registering negative growth in the last two quarters of the current financial year, stoppage of work at the coal companies would jeopardise all attempts at a possible financial recovery, Sahay said in his appeal.Emphasising that CIL and its subsidiaries have been declared Public Utility Services, Sahay said the organisation functions on ‘no work, no pay’ basis. Besides, eight days wages might be deducted if an employee is apprehended on disciplinary grounds, he said, adding that the stir would not only affect the employees and the company, but the country as a whole.
