PUDUCHERRY: Spot fines for traffic violations, parking fees and the declaration of one-way fare on certain roads are some of the proposals to be made to overcome the traffic woes of Puducherry, which is likely to aggravate in the coming days, said SSP (Law and Order)B Srikanth on Monday.Speaking to reporters, he said the proposals would be made to chief minister, leader of the opposition and chief secretary after showing them a presentation about the traffic problems existing in various areas of Puducherry. The presentation would also be made to a gathering of top officials of the transport, local administration, public works department, at a meeting to be held on March 16.The SSP said nearly 200 new vehicles were being added to the roads on a  daily basis and that 750 auto rickshaw permits were given recently. Srikanth, who recently took over as the SSP (L&O), quoting statistics said that 240 people were killed in road accidents in a year and nearly 6000 people suffered major and minor injuries from traffic-related accidents. He felt that the spot fines, as was being done in Chennai, would bring in some discipline as well as force drivers to obey the traffic rules. It has been found that many violators, when caught by the traffic police, immediately pressure the men in khaki by saying that they have high connections and usually escape without any punishment. The SSP felt that since space was a big constraint in various parts of town, the one-way system would be proposed. He added that parking fees on an hourly basis would deter the users from parking their vehicles for long hours, especially at areas like Nehru Street.Stressing the need for a long term perspective for managing the traffic problems, he  said a meeting of the transport coordination committee would also be held to discuss the issues. On allegations of police refusing to register complaints, the SSP said public can contact higher police officials, including him.
