CHENNAI: Malli Gourmet Awards 2011, an event to honour outstanding restaurants, stores and culinary personalities in the city, met with a resounding success at the Taj Coromandel here on Friday. Winners came in groups, accompanied by culinary experts dressed in their professional gears, to receive the awards. The awards ceremony is the initiative of Chennai’s own gourmet web search engine - www.malli.in. The website was started in 2008 to provide foodies in Chennai detailed information about the food destinations across the city. “With 60,000 clicks a day and an average time of six minutes spent on the website, Malli has been successful in taking one to a complete food adventure,” said Kavita Chesetty, its Director.“With this awards ceremony, we will provide a platform to honour establishments and people responsible for defining the city’s culinary landscape,” she added.The awards covered 32 various categories ranging from Best South Indian Restaurant - Fine Dining or Casual Dining, Best Chinese Restaurant, Best Ice-Cream Parlour to Best Indian Sweets Store. Some of the winners included Six-O-One for Best All Day Dining, Tibbs Frankie for Best Kiosk and Lotus for Best Thai Restaurant.There were some unique categories as well. For example, Best Veg/Fruit Store award was given to Suriya Greens, while the award for Most Innovative Restaurant went to On The Rocks, Sheraton Park Hotel and Towers. The Culinary Icon Award went to Chef Willi Wilson and the Most Popular Chef - Voters’ Choice Award went to Sandhesh Reddy.Dismissing claims that the awards may be “biased”, hospitality consultant V V Giri, who was one of the members in the jury, said, “This is not like the awards for films. We are not in the parliament. There is no trust deficit out here. We have been as honest and frank as possible.” Other jury members included designer Rehane Dhala and actor and entrepreneur Arvind Swami.Two rounds of fashion shows where models displayed various collections of C Krishniah Chetty and Sons were held.
