TIRUR: If things go as planned by the State Government, the proposed Malayalam University will be inaugurated on the ‘Keralappiravi’ Day this year. Efforts are being made to start the functioning of the university in a rented building in Tirur from November 1. The construction of the university campus, too, will begin by that time.The Special Officer of the University, K Jayakumar, will submit a project report to the government this week. “I have prepared a detailed report which will be submitted to the government on Wednesday or Thursday,” Jayakumar told ‘Express’.The campus is planned to be set up on around 100 acres of land. At least 50 acres is required to start work on first phase.Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb, K Jayakumar and C Mammootty MLA had visited the land of the Thunchan Memorial College near Tirur in March. The minister has also asked Jayakumar to prepare a report on land acquisition within a month. As Jayakumar was promoted Chief Secretary in the same month the busy schedule prevented him from completing the report on time.However, the Education Minister did not want to change Jayakumar from the post of Special Officer of the university, taking into consideration his expertise in the area. Jayakumar was given more time to prepare the report which he has completed after consulting with experts.“We are confident of opening the university on November 1. All the government functionaries are working hard for the purpose,” C Mammootty said.Twenty-two acres of the Thunchan Memorial Government College will be acquired for the varsity. 53 acres of revenue land near the college has also been identified. Revenue officials have been asked to identify the rest of the land.
