THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A sports science centre, the first-of-its-kind in the State, would come up at the SAI centre at Lakshmi Bai National College for Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariavattom. It is the third sports science centre to be set up in the country, followed by the National Institute of Sports (NIS) Patiala and SAI’s Bangalore centre. The sports officialdom has assessed that it is neither dearth of talents nor lack of luck that embarrasses the nation in international arenas. It is this introspection that has thrown open the doors for sports science centres in the country. These centres have been designed to impart scientific training to sportspersons as well as trainers. Dr G Kishore, SAI regional director, said that the new centre would help provide scientific training to sportspersons.”Across the globe, scientific innovations are gaining momentum. This has benefited sportspersons a lot. For example, a person engaged in throw items should have strong muscle mass and an optimum lipid level. A high jumper should have a proper idea of how the centre of gravity works. These aspects can be taught to the sportsperson only if we have sufficient gadgets and facilities,” he said. Apparatus worth more than ` 1.5 crore will be installed at LNCPE in a couple of weeks. “We need to be professional if we want to regularly perform well at the international level. The bio-mechanics behind each aspect of the sport should be learned by the respective sportsperson. The physical capabilities, strength and limitations of each sportsperson varies from another. The endurance skills of a long-distance runner would be greater than that of a sprint runner. We have to assess the capabilities of a sportsperson before deciding his training module.‘’Another highlight of the centre will be a state-of-the-art sports medicine facility. Prevention of injuries, rehabilitation and speedy recovery are the key factors behind the success of a sportsperson and we lack a superior facility,” Kishore added.
