Live: Relief for Salman Khan as Bombay HC suspends his sentencing, won't have to go to jail
Salman has been convicted at a session court and sentenced to 5 years of jail term for his role in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

1:15 pm: It does happen that people who don't have resources remain in jail but that does not mean that those who have resources can't appeal for relief.

1:05 pm: Salman will have to be notionally taken into custody in the next couple of hours. He will have to go to Sessions Court where he will have to submit a fresh bail bond after which he will not have to go to jail.

12:55 pm: Court has granted liberty to Salman Khan to apply for permission to travel abroad, court says it shall be dealt on merit.

12:52 pm: Court to issue next directions on 15 June. Judge says that the hearing on appeal can be in the months of July-August.

12:50 pm: Salman Khan has been asked to surrender himself before sessions court and execute bail bond. He will have to surrender his passport along with furnishing the bail bond.

12:45 pm: Details of the judgement: Salman has to furnish bail bond of Rs 30,000 among other things. The accused warrant 304 part 2 also need to be examined. Normally, state does not oppose suspension of sentence pending appeal if accused has been on bail during pendency of trial. It will be proper to suspend sentence pending hearing and disposal of appeal.

12:44 pm: Salman's fans cheer outside his residence after judge says he won't have to go to jail.

12:42 pm: The judge in the hearing said that the applicant (Salman) has been released on bail as he not likely to abscond.

12:40 pm: "High Court must have thought that since he is on bail and his appeal has been pending, his bail should be extended," says senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam.

12:35 pm: Relief for Salman Khan. Bombay High Court suspends his sentencing. He will not be taken into custody and will be released on bail.

12:30 pm: Judge says, "there cannot be reverse discrimination because of who I am. Earlier nobody applied 304 part 2 for accident cases.

12:19 pm: Judge observes that the sentence has to be suspended. "You can deal with the appeal expeditiously. Why should the appellants right suffer when his appeal is pending," the judge says.

12:13 pm: Public prosecutor gives a reply to Salman's lawyers, says "So far as the theory of the 4th person is concerned that was only introduced when defence witness Ashok Singh came up."

12:05 pm: Judge questions Salman's lawyer over when he got the copy of the judgement. Judge tells Salman's lawyer that he wants to make sure that no attempt was made to mislead the court when seeking interim relief.

12:01 pm: A Salman Khan fan from Bandra East consumed some poisonous substance outside the Bombay High Court, he has been rushed to a hospital.

12:00 noon: Judge asks public prosecutor to explain why he would oppose suspension of Salman's sentence in the case.

11:59 am: Public prosecutor in court claims Salman's blood sample was tested for alcohol and it was much above permissible limit.

11:49 am: Salman's lawyer says the Investigating officer who is a prosecution witness has said that driver Ashok Singh was interrogated on October 1 2002 but chose not to record his statement.

11:45 am: "One prosecution witness has said that two persons were present in addition to Salman and Patil. Has the prosecution been able to bring a contradiction on the witness claims of there having been 4 persons," he asked.

11:34 am: "Ravindra Patil gave an interview to midday reporter on 29 September, 2002. Patel said that driver Altaf was at the wheel when the accused left home but the judge did not allow it to be taken into account as evidence," says Salman's lawyer.

11:31 am: "The distance from Marriot Hotel to incident site is 7 to 8 kms. Ravinda Patil says they took half hour to reach. Then they would have been driving at 40 km/h and not 90 as claimed," says Salman's lawyer.

11:23 am:"I will point out from prosecutions own evidence that there were 4 people," says Salman's lawyer.

11:20 am: "One of the major issues that arises in the case is how many people were in the vehicle. The prosecution says 3, we say there were 4. Kamal Khan who was the other person in the vehicle has not been examined by the prosecution," Salman's lawyer.

11:18 am: While hearing in court, Salman Khan's lawyer Amit Desai says there is a basis for suspension of sentence.

10:54 am: Salman's sister Alvira, manager Reshma Shetty, former MLA and friend Baba Siddique arrive in court.

Salman Khan is not present at the Bombay High Court for the bail hearing. The actor, who has been convicted at a session court and sentenced to 5 years of jail term for his role in the 2002 hit-and-run case, has appealed to High Court for bail.
