LeT, Jaish in US list of foreign terror groups
The US continually monitors the activities of terrorist groups.

New Delhi: Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the Pakistan-based terror groups, are among the 44 outfits designated as 'Foreign Terror Organisations' (FTO) by the US.

Besides these two, other groups active in India -- Bangladesh-based Harkat-ul-Jihad-i-Islami and Pakistan-based Harkat-ul-Mujahideen -- are also in the list issued by the Office of the Coordinator for Counter terrorism of the US Department of State.

"FTO designations play a critical role in our fight against terrorism and are effective means of curtailing support for terrorist activities and pressurising groups to get out of the terrorism business," a State Department statement said.

Other groups of the South Asia and Middle East region include Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Lashkar-e-Janghvi, Hamas, Palestine Liberation Front and Palestine Islamic Jihad. The State Department continually monitors the activities of terrorist groups active around the world to identify potential targets for designation.

When reviewing potential targets, it looks not only at the actual terrorist attacks that a group has carried out, but also whether the group has engaged in planning and preparations for possible future acts of terrorism or retains the capability and intent to carry out such acts.
