BHUBANESWAR: Even as Utkal University authorities had decided to open an on-campus ‘Exam Redressal Cell’ to save students from the hassle of running to courts on examination and certificate- related matters, the issue has gone to the legal cell. Even as the proposal was approved in the last syndicate meeting, it has now been sent to the legal cell of the University that would look into legal aspects before giving the final approval. Utkal University is one of the largest educational institutions in the country in terms of affiliated colleges and student strength. It has as many as 350 affiliated colleges, including 15 autonomous ones, 27 post-graduate departments, two constituent law colleges and a distance education centre which caters to a student strength of over a lakh. The decision was expected to bring relief to thousands of students who are yet to get their certificates due to procedural delays. “The objective was to provide a speedy solution to all examination and certificate-related complaints and make the ordeal less taxing. The redressal cell, if approved, will act as a platform where students can submit their complaints and find a quick solution,” said Controller of Examinations Susanta Das. Sources said a five-member committee was already formed to look into the cases. The members comprise PG Council Chairman P K Sarkar, a nominee from the office of the Vice-Chancellor, a member of the Syndicate, Controller of Examinations Das and a professor of Law department of the varsity. “With many cases coming to the varsity office relating to issuance of certificates and problems with examinations, we had decided to come up with the redressal cell. This will work well for both the students and the varsity officials. Any decision to make the cell functional can only be taken after the legal cell clears the decision,” Das added. On the other hand, the varsity has decided to go ahead with the proposal of setting up a Pension Adalat in the varsity. A decision in this regard was also taken in the last syndicate meeting. “Like the exam redressal cell, the pension adalat would work for speedy redressal of matters related to pension of former varsity employees,” said Sarkar. He said the adalat would be made operational soon.
