NAMAKKAL: A lawyer was on Wednesday convicted by the principal district and sessions court here on bigamy charges. The lawyer was sentenced to undergo five years of imprisonment and slapped with a fine of `10 lakh. Principal district and sessions judge N Velu sentenced seven persons, including the lawyer’s mother and second wife, to five years of imprisonment each, besides slapping a fine of `5,000, for abetting bigamy. According to court sources, K Muruganantham, of Annimangalam in Ariyalur was sentenced to five years imprisonment and a fine of `10 lakh under sec 494 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The judge ordered that this amount be paid to Jayanthi (name changed), the aggrieved first wife, and her son. Muruganantham was also convicted on four other counts, including dowry harassment, criminal intimidation and ‘insult by pointing to the caste’ and sentenced to undergo one-year imprisonment and slapped with a fine under each count, the sources said. He was ordered to serve the prison terms concurrently.Seven others — Muruganantham’s mother Dhanapakkiam, his aunt Janaki, her husband Dhakshinamoorthy, Ranganathan, Muruganantham’s second wife Parimala, her father Rajamanickam and mother Kamala — were sentenced to undergo five years of imprisonment and a `5,000 fine each.Dhanapakkiam and Ranganatham were also convicted for criminal intimidation and slapped with a prison term of six months and `5,000 as fine. The seventh accused in the case, Thirunavukkarasu, was acquitted by the sessions court while the second accused, Kaliaperumal, passed away some years ago.
