A youth was arrested for stealing laptops and gadgets in and around Adyar police district for over four years, here on Tuesday.
The long-time culprit surfaced when police pursued a complaint on a missing I-phone lodged in Semmencherry police station.
Sources said the I-phone, which was stolen from Semmencherry, was found to be in use in Tondiarpet, from where it moved to Tirunelveli.
The location details were traced with International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI). The phone had recorded conversations using three different SIM cards.
Meanwhile, Balaji (25) of Tondiarpet was arrested by special sub-Inspector K Manikkam and his team while the accused attempted a robbery at a fuel station on Tuesday afternoon. Interrogations revealed that Balaji was the one who stole that I-phone. He had given it to his wife who in turn gave it to a relative from Tirunelveli. Five laptops were also recovered from the accused.
Police said his modus operandi was to ride out along the ECR, in Neelankarai and Velachery, where several young bachelor techies live. He would look out for terraces where only men’s clothes were left out to dry.
The accused would then narrow the field further to find out whether the house owner was living in the neighbourhood and choose only the houses where the owners live away. The quality of vehicles and number of bachelors occupying the house were further criteria in choosing his victims —
the higher the number of occupants, the more laptops and mobiles he could steal.
Having selected his victims, Balaji would simply go inside the house posing as if he was sent by the owner of the house for some maintenance work. he would even involve everyone in some piece of work while he stole goods. For the last robbery, he had used a 1 cm pvc pipe, 20 ft long, which he made all the six persons hold in the terrace while he decamped with the mobiles and laptops from the house.
