Srinagar: Indian security forces registered a major success on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district when they killed a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist, Abu Qasim, after several hours of intense gunbattle.
The mastermind behind Udhampur BSF convoy attack was killed by security forces in an ambush in Khandipura in Kulgam district.
Confirming the news, Inspector General of Kashmir Police SJM Geelani said, "LeT operations chief Abu Qasim was killed in an encounter in Kulgam. This is a major success for us. He was active in the valley for last 5 years and was heading Kashmir operations of Lashakar since last 3 years."
Qasim had killed a police officer early this month in Bandipora district and managed to escape when he was being chased. The Jammu and Kashmir police had announced a bounty on Qasim's head.
The National Investigation Agency had also announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for information on Qasim.
In August, India's security forces with the help of a local village defence committee, caught a young terrorist alive after a brief gunbattle in Udhampur. One of his accomplices had already been killed by the security forces earlier.
This came after terrorists ambushed a BSF convoy, killing at least two personnel and injuring eight others. The captured terrorist later revealed the operational details and Pakistan's hand in the terror attack.
