Patna: RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his former chief minister wife Rabri Devi will not be able to drive directly to the tarmac of Patna Airport from now as the union civil aviation ministry on Saturday withdrew the exemption given to them.
The ministry has issued an order to the Director General, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which reads, “Their access in their own vehicle up to the tarmac is withdrawn with immediate effect.” The letter asks BCAS to take "immediate action to issue necessary instructions" to ensure implementation of the ministry's decision.
The withdrawal means the politician couple will have to go through normal security checks at Patna airport. Lalu use to travel to Ranchi almost every week for appearing in the designated CBI court in fodder scam related cases.
Lalu and Rabri had got exemption from security check in 2009 on a temporary basis due to health concerns, but it was never reviewed since then. The exemption was limited to Patna airport only, officials said.
RJD spokesman Manoj Jha slammed the move. “Compromising with security of our leader is totally unacceptable. Modi government is targeting opposition leaders,” he said, adding that Ram Vilas Paswan and BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha also get exemption from security checks.
