AMALAPURAM: Crop holiday study committee president and former chief secretary Mohan Kanda said they would submit recommendations to the state government to benefit farmers who declared crop holiday.A six-member committee led by Mohan Kanda visited Allavaram, Bendamurulanka and some villages in Amalapuram division on Saturday to interact with farmers. Speaking on the occasion, Mohan Kanda said the problems of farmers and reasons for declaring crop holiday would be mentioned in their report to the state government. Commissioner of Agriculture V Usharani said the committee would also study reasons for crop holiday in 87,000 acres in 13 mandals of Konaseema region. A farmer Y Brahmanandam said they were forced to invest `24,500 per acre to cultivate paddy but got only `18,500 after selling paddy, thereby incurring a loss of `5,000 to `6,000. He said cultivation was not possible unless agricultural inputs were supplied at 75 per cent subsidy. He demanded `2,040 MSP per quintal of paddy as per Swaminathan committee recommendations. I Umamaheswara Rao of Gollavilli village said they were forced to undertake distress sale of paddy as they could not get MSP last year. Another farmer Y Venkataramana asked for job cards so they could instead take up works under NREGS. Many farmers stressed the need for change in crop insurance to benefit farmers. P Venkatarao of Komarigiripatnam alleged over 2,000 acres of land had got inundated for not desilting drains.
