BANGALORE: Labour scarcity might hinder Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board  (BWSSB)  from completing the Cauvery IV Stage II Phase drinking water project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of the  year.According to the information available at the work sites, some of the major works allotted in the project have been delayed. The contract for constructing the tanks at Torekadanahalli, Harohalli and Tatagunni pumping stations and supply and installation of 30 big pumps was awarded to Kirloskar and SPM at the cost of Rs 36 crore. Though Kirloskar has already supplied the pumps, the civil works to install them in the aforesaid pumping stations are still pending. It is highly unlikely that the pumping trials will  start in January as planned by the BWSSB. BWSSB chairman P B Ramamurthy said, “All the contracts are time bound and as per the plan these works are supposed to be completed by the first              week of January. We noticed the delay and had held a meeting with the contractors to direct them to complete the work within the time span. We are doing whatever is possible to complete the project by December.”At present, the BWSSB is supplying only 900 MLD  of water to the city from all the four stages of Cauvery drinking water project and Tippagondanahalli Reservoir, though there is a demand for 1,250 MLD of water in the city. An additional 500 MLD of water supply to the city will be possible only if the BWSSB completes the Cauvery IV Stage II Phase project.
