KOCHI: Kudumiparambu residents live an adventurous life with regular walks on slippery roads with potholes and muddy water evading snakes and rodents. Their constant requests and complaints to the authorities have gone unnoticed.“People in this area suffer water-logging irrespective of the season. During high tide, saline water overflowing from the aqua farm floods the entire region. Most of the school students have to pass through the brook. During rainy season, the children don’t go to schools as they cannot walk through the water” said Nirmala, a resident of the ward. Many residents frequently  meet with accidents while attempting to cross these unsafe roads. Even access to medical care is difficult due to the lack of proper transportation. “I had to take my husband to the hospital on a chair as he cannot walk” said Annie. The area is also suffering from the scarcity of potable water. Although, the authorities have provided the area with three water taps, but generally the water doesn’t flow from these taps. “There has been no water in this area for the past three days. The water comes at the midnight or at the wee hours of the morning. It is difficult to fetch water at the odd hours due to the presence of venomous snakes and rodents” said Nirmala. After constant requests, the authorities did provide streetlights in this area, but they don’t work. “Many developmental measures were initiated by the government but nothing has been implemented so far. We were promised the repair of the road by the election candidates. They said the road will be fixed in six months time. It has been over a year and nothing as been done,” said Ambika, another resident of Kudumiparambu.Justifying the lack of developmental activities, the panchayat president Anandavalli Chellapan said the panchayat gets a small fund every year which has to be divided among the wards. “We have asked the government to provide more funds but it will take some more time,” Chellapan said.
