In a step to help out students, nearly 40 institutes in Kota in Rajasthan have come together to launch a round-the-clock helpline that will offer counselling, track callers suffering from depression. Kota is considered as the coaching hub of the country.
The move comes after a rise in cases of student suicides in Kota. In 2015, the police have recorded 24 suicides by students so far. Students face crippling pressure and mental fatigue when preparing for exams and often resort to taking certain extreme steps.
After a spurt in cases of student suicides, institutes that offer corporate coaching' in slots of five to six hours a day, have counsellors on board.
The problems that the students reveal vary from lack of concentration, dipping confidence levels to depression but counsellors feel they have their constraints. "Parents sometimes don't support and understand the children. Students try to do well but parents sometimes don't trust them and have a lot of expectations from them," a counsellor Vinod Sahni said.
People who man the IIT coaching factories of Kota feel the sheer number of students makes it impossible for them to be given enough attention. The vibe of the place in purely Darwinian - survival of the fittest.
While the rewards for doing well are many and clearly defined, it's often the punishment that students administer on themselves that usually cause trouble.
