Coming a long way since its inception 25 years ago, Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), functioning under the State Tourism Department, is all set to make its silver jubilee year memorable by launching a series of courses along with student and faculty exchange programmes through tie-ups with Leeds University, UK and Santiago University, California.
The Institute has also initiated steps for affiliation with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar told a news conference here on Friday that the government had decided to make KITTS a nodal centre of various institutes offering courses in different streams under the Tourism Department. KIITS director Rajashree Ajith added that the task of the Institute is to develop more capacity building programmes and quality enhancement, while going in for industry-specific, futuristic courses. Rajashree said that in the year-long silver jubilee fete planned, business sessions and seminars, aimed at tourism inclusive growth in the state would be held every month. Many of the short-term, skill development courses programmed by the Institute such as Naturalist course for Tribals, who were selected from the forest belt of Thenmala,Idukki and Wayanad, were well received and have become a big attraction with the tourists.
120 VHSE students who were admitted to a finishing school formed by the Institute had successfully come out to earn instant jobs. KITTS also offers a two-year MBA course, affiliated to the Kerala University, as well as various PG Diploma courses. The Institute has emerged as a recognised centre of IATA, to conduct internationally acclaimed examinations and awarding certificates in public relations and tourism, event management, airport operation, spa management, branding and logistics.
An agreement had been reached during Emerging Kerala to enlist KITTS as a centre for evaluation of various proposals in the tourism sector and also to conduct studies and research as well as consultancy services. CM Oommen Chandy would inaugurate the silver jubilee fete at KITTS Residency, Thycaud on September 26, at 3 p.m. With the Tourism Minister in the presidential chair,Health Minister V S Sivakumar will release a film on KITTS. Shashi Tharoor MP, will launch the IATA courses on the occasion.
