THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 72nd edition of the Kerala University Inter-collegiate Athletics Championship began here on Wednesday. When the competitions of the first day were over, SN College, Punalur, bagged two gold medals to top the score chart in the men’s category. Meanwhile, SN College for Women, Kollam, and SN College, Cherthala, clinched two golds each, thereby topping the score sheet in women’s category. The noted performance of the day came from Sreejith Mon K and Saranya J Sreejith of SD College, Alappuzha, almost touched the 7-m mark (6.99m) to finish first in the men’s long jump finals. Saranya J of SN College, Cherthala, the former state shot put champion, shot the ball to a distance of 11.7 m and grabbed gold. The victory of Saranya was quite emphatic as her nearest opponent finished almost three meters short of her distance.
