In an unprecedented move, a suspended top official of a company has been reinstated by the board meeting violating government directions. Kerafed has reinstated the suspended Finance Director against whom the Finance Inspection Wing detected serious irregularities, which is a clear indication of defying the government’s ratification of the suspension.
The government received a letter from Kerafed stating that the Finance Director had been reinstated after a board meeting. It is learnt that the board meeting was held as per the whims of the members. Though the secretary of the Agriculture Department is to participate in the board meeting, it is understood that he had not been participating in it for a long time. Moreover, sources said that the board meeting should be conducted only after intimating the government.
The Finance Inspection Wing report, a copy of which is with the Express, had pointed out certain irregularities in the functioning of the Finance Director. The Inspection Wing had submitted the report when the official was under suspension.
Highly placed sources said that the decision to reinstate the Finance Director violated the government’s ratification of the suspension by Kerafed Managing Director.
Kerafed MD K Pratapan had earlier said that the board meeting had decided to form a sub-committee to look into the issue as the Finance Inspection Wing had noted certain adverse remarks against the officer in the report.
Once action is taken against an official, it should have to be ratified by the board meeting. Instead of taking disciplinary action against the suspended official, the board had taken a favourable decision only to protect the interests of certain people, sources said.
The decision to reinstate the official was a preplanned one and it could have adverse impact on the functioning of the company and could adversely affect the morale of other employees, they said. It also posed a pertinent question whether the board was above the government, the sources said.
