His demise on the eve of the release of U, Me Aur Hum cast a pall of gloom in the family.

Mumbai: Filmmaker Shomu Mukherji, father of actors Kajol and Tanisha, died on Thursday following a massive cardiac arrest, family sources said. He was 65.

Mukherjee is survived by actor-wife Tanuja and his daughters.

Sources said Mukherji was unwell for quite some time and had to be hospitalised as well. He breathed his last at 0820 hours IST at his Mumbai residence.

Mukherji's death on the eve of the release of U, Me Aur Hum, the directorial debut of his son-in-law Ajay Devgan, cast a pall of gloom in the family.

However, family sources said the film would be released as per schedule. Devgan had not organised a premiere for the film on Thursday.

Shomu, the youngest son of late Sashidhar Mukherji and founder of the Filmalaya studios, was a producer-director of films like Ek Baar Muskura Do (1972), Nanha Shikhari (1973), Chaila Babu (1977), Fifty Fifty (1981), Pathar Ke Insan (1990) and Sangdil Sanam (1994).

His other siblings Joy and Deb Mukherji were actors.

For the past couple of months Kajol had been keeping a strict watch on his food and medication. According to reports, Kajol even stayed away from her family to spend time with her father in the hospital.
