MADURAI: Members of the Tamil Nadu Jallikattu Peravai on Monday rallied demanding the deposit for the sport to be waived and a ban on the animal welfare organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.The rally, which originated in Teppakulam, culminated at the Collectorate. Members of the Peravai from various districts, inclu-ding Madurai, Pudukottai, Namakkal, Virudhunagar and Salem, participated. The rallyists, carrying placards, demanded that the government ban PETA, which they alleged, was funded by multinational organisations. Police stopped the rallyists near the Tiruvalluvar Statue and allowed only the State-level office-bearers of the Peravai to proceed to the Madurai Distict Collector’s office to present the memorandum. In the memorandum, the organisers urged either for the Rs 2 lakh deposit to be waived or the government bear the expense. They also sought that the villages left out in the list be permitted to hold Jallikkattu. P Rajasekaran, president of the Jallikattu Peravai, who led the rally, said, “For the last five years, Jallikattu is being organised in a safe ma-nner on the directions of the Supreme Court...” The Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh issued a notification including bull in the list of performing animals along side wild animals such as lion and tiger, he said and appealed for the bull to be excluded from the list.
