KOZHIKODE: Few are aware that Kozhikode had a major role to play in the genesis of the word ‘jackfruit’. The word comes from the Portuguese word ‘jaca’ which in turn is derived from the Malayalam word ‘chakka’. When the Portuguese landed in Kozhikode, they were introduced to the jackfruit and they took it back to their homeland, giving the fruit its name. Now a unique celebration is being planned in the city that gave jackfruit its name. ‘Chakkamahotsavam’ literally translates to ‘Jackfruit festival’ and it is a celebration of everything associated with the fruit. The festival has been organised in Wayanad and Thiruvananthapuram for the last four years and it will debut in Kozhikode at the Government Model HSS on May 24. The fest is being organised statewide by an organisation named ‘Uravu’ and it will partner with a number of organisations.
