Shillong: The Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the alleged beating of street children by a jawan.
"In a prompt action, the Army has ordered a court of inquiry to ascertain the facts. The guards have been replaced forthwith", PTI quoted a defence spokesman as saying.
The jawan is alleged to have beaten two street children — Donborlang Kharbuli and Ami Sharma — with a bamboo stick. The incident took place near Lady Kean college area of Shillong on December 24.
NGOs and political parties in Shillong were up in arms after the local dailies carried the news of the alleged beating and demanded immediate action.
The defence spokesman added that the Army had taken a very serious view of the incident and the personnel if found guilty would be punished severely.
