New Delhi: India, on Friday, strongly condemned the terrorist attack on former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto in Karachi.

The Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad, Satyabrata Pal, met Benazir on Friday and called for determined action by all governments against terrorism in the region.

''We are horrified by the loss of innocent life caused by the terrorist attack on your convoy and the injuries to some of your senior colleagues. We are relieved that you yourself are unhurt. Terrorism is a common challenge to all of us in South Asia. We look forward to working with you to defeat terrorism in all its forms,'' news agency PTI quoted the High Commissioner as telling Benazir.

A spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry strongly condemned the terrorist acts and said it was “reprehensible”.

''We strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Karachi yesterday. It is reprehensible that senior political figures are targeted in this way with such loss of innocent life. The spectre of terrorism confronting our region requires strong and determined action by all our Governments,'' the spokesman said in response to a question,” the official was quoted as saying.

On Thursday night suicide bombers struck the PPP leader’s convoy, killing over 165 people and leaving nearly 450 injured. Bhutto escaped unhurt hours after her return from an eight-year self-exile.

Bhutto was on her way to a party meeting in Karachi, greeting thousands of supporters who had gathered to welcome her, when two bombs went off.
