New Delhi: Hours after former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed requested India to send an envoy and intervene in the ongoing political crisis in the archipelago, the External Affairs finally issued its first official statement on the situation to say that “we are disturbed".

“We are disturbed by the declaration of a State of Emergency in the Maldives following the refusal of the Government to abide by the unanimous ruling of the full bench of the Supreme Court on 1 February, and also by the suspension of Constitutional rights of the people of Maldives," the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

Taking to Twitter, Nasheed wrote on Tuesday, “On behalf of Maldivian people, we humbly request Indian to send envoy backed by its military, to release judges and pol detainees including President Gayoom. We request physical presence."

Nasheed, the first democratically elected President of the island nation also urged the United States of America to stop all financial transactions of Maldives regime leaders going through the US banks. Maldives President Abdulla Yameen declared a 15-day state of emergency on Monday, deepening a political crisis in the country that has pitted its leader against the nation's top court.

The ministry further said, “The arrest of the Supreme Court Chief Justice and political figures are also reasons for concern. Government continues to carefully monitor the situation."
