CHENNAI: Groups that run multiple institutions on the same land used for getting permission to start just one arts and science college will not be spared, Madras University Vice-Chancellor Col G Thiruvasagam warned on Saturday. Commenting on a resolution adopted at the Academic Council meeting of the university, which disaffiliated three arts and science colleges for want of infrastructure, he observed that some managements, while showing a piece of land for seeking permission to start an arts and science college, end up running additional institutions, such as engineering colleges or schools on the same premises.  He said that in order to ensure that colleges provided students with adequate infrastructure, the commission that inspects such aspects would be asked to visit the colleges multiple times in an academic year. The three colleges that were disaffiliated are AA Arts & Science College, Koyambedu; J A Arts & Science College, Mogappair East, and Poonga College of Arts and Science, Uthandi. The decision to disaffiliate them was taken at the syndicate meeting on January 27. However, when aske d by Express on what action would be taken against government colleges that did not fulfil infrastructure norms, such as appointment of full time principal, he said the university was “not eligible to direct the government colleges on course of action”. This, he said, in the context of Presidency College functioning without a full-time principal for more than three years.  The vice-chancellor said that the UGC has given its consent for continuance of phase two of the university with Potential for Excellence scheme for the varsity. The funds for phase two have been enhanced to Rs 50 crore.
