Delhi-based artist Vinod Sharma’s art, on display at the Vinnyasa premier art gallery, is poetry on canvas.
You don’t see any labels or any descriptions on them; they are open-ended and for the interpretation of art lovers. His latest series Dialogue of Silence centres on the theme of silence through different works on landscape and rocks — which are a few of the artist’s favourite themes.
“Rocks fascinate me, I want to capture their character, the feel and experiment with the forms, layers and colours. Rocks are no more hues of gray, they are orange, blue and green too,” says Sharma.
The artist, an alumnus of the College of Arts in Delhi, says that not one of his exhibits have a label, and that is for a particular purpose. “That’s for an art lover or viewer to interpret whatever he or she can from my works,” he says.
In the meandering shades of a valley or the mysticism of a landscape in grey, the paintings that speak the language of silence throw open a whole new world.
The serenity and desolate stillness of the works come alive, in a form that evokes an internal dialogue.
Every element in the paintings exudes a new character. The fleeting emotions alternate between stillness and transience.
The artist, who prefers the oil medium in his paintings, breathes life in every frame.
As Ashrafi S Bhagat, art historian and critic observes in her preview to the work, “This methodology and approach to art making gestures towards his intense passionate absorption in his works and more so of having internalised images over a long period of time that they come pouring forth from his subconscious. As a matter of fact his constructed landscapes have a zen-like contemplative quality which indexes towards the artist’s persona of quietitude or a serene demeanour.”
