BANGALORE: In whose hands does the fate of the road in front of ISRO Colony and the hundreds of commuters using that stretch lie? From the looks of it, this particular stretch has been in a miserable condition for months now. What was until a while ago a few minor potholes and a blocked drain has today turned into every motorists’ nightmare come alive. From the moment one takes a left from 1st Main Road towards Cambridge Layout, the bumpy ride begins. The stretch has a number of problems — construction material and debris dumped along the road sides, a blocked and overflowing drainage and a battered road. The condition of the road is abominable. The potholes are deep enough to probably dent or in worse case scenario even break the axel of a four-wheeler.“I was commuting on this road. I did not realise how bad the broken stretch was.Even though I was driving extremely slowly and carefully, I ended up damaging my car,” said Kamal, a commuter. The situation would not have reached this state had the Palike mended the road in time. Clearly they do not believe in ‘a stitch in time saves nine’.Ajith, a car sales manager also conveyed his disappoint in the state of affairs. He said, “The road is, simply put, a nightmare to commute through. Though the recent rains might have done well for the blistering heat, they have not helped when it comes to the condition of the road. The conditions of the potholes has only deteriorated.” The rain water fills the potholes thereby, creating mini pools and hence, clouding the driver’s ability to judge and gauge the depth of the pothole ahead.Ajith further added that, the rains have only added to his worries regarding the commute. He also mentioned, “I don’t know who, but some people have dumped construction debris and mud inside those ‘craters’.It could probably be in an attempt to fill the potholes but with one rain the entire area becomes a mess. The condition of the road seems to be going from bad to worse.” Another commuter Praveen Reddy, a realtor said that it appears as though no one is interested in taking care or looking into the matter of the broken road.“Seems like the civic agencies are least bothered about what we have to go through. The vehicles literally bounce from side to side over these potholes,” he said.Commenting on the issue, BBMP cheif engineer East, Somashekhar said that he would personally visit and inspect the area. He further added that he was under the impression that the BWSSB was working in that area, and as a result the road was broken. If the chief engineer’s word is to be taken, we may soon have a smooth and pothole-free stretch.
