BARIPADA: The Governor, MC Bhandare’s visit, three years back, had raised hopes of better education for the children of Ziani village under Maratandi panchayat of Kuliana block, nearly five km from here. During his visit in November 2008 Bhandare had inaugurated Gyanalok Project, designed specially for school dropouts, and also distributed about 100 school bags besides stationery among the kids. Three years later, the project is yet to be properly implemented and kids take their lessons under a tamarind tree. With only about 34 students in Class-I and Class-II, the Ziani Khadiasahi UP School is functioning since 2008. A woman teacher takes classes under a tamarind tree in the absence of a building while a shed provides them shelter during monsoon. Headmaster of Badjunabani UP School Bimal Kumar Acharya, who is in -charge headmaster of the school, hardly comes here.To check the dropout rate, the National Service Scheme of North Odisha University in collaboration with Baripada College had constructed a Chatashali in the village but that too is non-functional now. A volunteer teacher of the Chatashali, Thakura Soren, said none is concerned about it and financial aid has been stopped for the last two years. “We had requested the collector for a school building but no step has yet been taken,” said a villager, Sarojani Murmu. While education is still an unfulfilled dream here, about 150 families in the village struggle for basic necessities too. Predominately inhabited by Khadia tribe, the village has no road link, electricity, drinking water and health facilities. The roads have developed cracks forcing upon people untold miseries during rainy days. A bore-well is not enough to meet the drinking water requirement of the entire village and health services are equally bad with patients being taken to hospitals in headquarters town in carts.A villager, Karan Murmu, said while interacting with the villagers Bhandare had assured that he would visit the village again. “Though three years have lapsed since, no tangible development has taken place. Surprisingly the Governor has not paid a single visit to the village though he was in Mayurbhanj twice during the period,” he said.DPC of Sarva Siksha Abhijan Digantar Routray feigned ignorance about the school but assured to look into it.
