The English film Inception turned out to be so huge that it has eaten up a humongous share of the Bollywood box office this week, leaving Udaan and Tere Bin Laden with crumbs.
This should have been expected. Christian Nolan’s films have their own huge fan base in India and Inception was being talked about even before it released in India.
Manish Dutt, Managing Director of VR Films and Studios Pvt Ltd, says, “Inception was bound to take a huge opening. There was no question about it. People, in fact, were looking forward to it. After the release, the word of mouth publicity only made it bigger.”
Manish’s company handles dubbing for most Hollywood films that come to India. He says surprisingly the dubbed version made Inception a mass film and that killed all prospects of the other films releasing with it.
“Earlier films like 2011 and Knight and Day have eaten into the metro market. So, film-makers need to be careful of which English movie they are releasing their films with,” he says.
Vajir Singh, Executive Editor, BoxOffice India, however, thinks Inception is not the only reason that these small films didn’t do well. “They weren’t promoted well. Whatever promos were out were not really inspiring. Inception of course, was a blow, too, as even before it released in India, there was a buzz that it is an awesome film and it lived up to its expectations,” he says.
Vikramaditya Motwane, the director of Udaan agrees that Inception has been crucial in the poor box-office returns of his film. “Also, the fact that two small films (Udaan and Tere Bin Laden) released at the same time affected the market,” he says.
