Haryana to investigate Haj bribery
CNN-IBN had caught on camera Haj Committee members and officials of Haryana taking bribes to allocate seats.

New Delhi: A day after CNN-IBN aired the video showing bribes were taken from people to allocate them seats for the pilgrimage, the Haryana Haj Committee on Thursday refuted the charge saying the allegations against the official will be investigated.

Each pilgrim had paid Rs 10,700 with application money and the state government had paid a subsidy of Rs 19,700, Chairman of the Haj Committee Azad Mohammed said in a statement in Chandigarh.

Azad said the state was allotted a quota of 1,192 pilgrims against which 3,128 applications were received.

A draw of lot was conducted for selecting the pilgrims, he said adding that there was no chance of any manipulation in the draw.

Mohammed said the fact that his own and members of his family could not go on Haj was "sufficient proof" that the draw was performed in a "very clean and clear manner".

He said that the allegations in the media against an employee of the Haj Committee Usman Khan Durani would be thoroughly investigated.

If found guilty stern action would be taken against him, said Mohammed.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of CNN-IBN had caught on camera Haj Committee members and officials of Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh taking bribes to allocate seats to the pilgrims.
