KOCHI: The harvest festival in Manalkoor pokkali paddy field in Kumbalangi began on Monday.Last year the cultivation was in 50 acres. This year it was increased to 240 acres. The pokkali cultivation is a joint effort of Agriculture Department, Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union(KSKTU), Grama Panchayath and Kumbalangi Model Tourism Society. The representatives of all agencies involved in the scheme had held meetings to review the progress in cultivation.“The seeds for cultivation was distributed from the Krishibhavan at free cost. Labourers were arranged under the Employment Guarantee Programme,” said Shaji Kurupassery of Kumbalangi Model Tourism Society.“Those who want to cultivate barren land will be provided with an assistance of `5,000/ hector,” said the agriculture officer. Kumbalangi panchayath president Usha Pradeep inaugurated the harvest festival. Palluruthy block panchayath president Sudhambika, block Panchayath president M P Rathan, District panchayath member T J Leenus and Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society president M P sivadathan were present.
