The health department expressed their concern about this, as unrefined edible oil is harmful to human health.

On Wednesday afternoon, unrefined edible oil spilt into the waterbody after a pipeline of Emami Agrotech Limited leaked. This incident reportedly took place in the area under the jurisdiction of Haldia Municipality. This incident quickly went viral as the residents rushed to the waterbody to collect the spilt oil. The health department expressed their concern about this, as unrefined edible oil is harmful to human health.

It took place in the Chiranjibpur area under Haldia Municipality. As soon as the locals found out the pipeline got leaked they rushed to the waterbody with containers to collect the unrefined oil. However, it should be noted that unrefined edible oil is not safe for consumption as it needs to be processed scientifically in the factory. Consumption of unrefined oil can have severe health impacts, as it contains heavy metals and insoluble substances, which can be fatal for human beings. This has sparked concern within the health department.

According to media reports, unrefined edible oil can cause toxicity in the body, potentially damaging the liver. The local health department is trying to identify the people who collected the oil to inform them about the health hazards. Dr. Bibhas Roy, the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the district, stated, “Unrefined edible oil is harmful to the body. Health workers in the affected area have been informed to stay ready. They have been instructed to visit households to check if anyone has consumed the unrefined oil and experienced any adverse reactions or fallen ill.”

Notably, edible oil factories usually receive unrefined oil through pipelines from the Haldia port. The Haldia police have started an investigation to find out the real cause of this incident. They have reportedly collected some broken parts of the pipe to examine the quality and other factors.

Emami Agrotech officials mentioned that the hole in the pipeline was made with the intention of stealing. As per a report by ABP, the company incurred a loss of around Rs 1 crore. They stated that such incidents had taken place multiple times before. Despite constant patrolling by police officials such crimes continue to happen.
