Police are now questioning the owner of the school about the tragedy.

Port-au-Prince: The death toll from the school building collapse in Petionville, in the eastern outskirts of the Haitian capital, has risen to 90, EFE news agency reported on Monday, citing officials.

Legislator Steven Benoit, who represents Petionville, told reporters on Sunday that Rescue officials have recovered at least 90 bodies so far, adding that there was little chance of finding any more survivors three days after the school's collapse.

However, he said the emergency organisations, nevertheless, would continue the search for more survivors. At least 164 people were injured in the incident.

The building of La Promesse College collapsed on Friday morning when many students were inside thier classrooms. About 700 students attended the school on that fateful day.

Meanwhile, tensions were rising as desperate relatives of the missing school children gathered at the site, demanding that authorities speed up the search for their loved ones, and making rescue efforts more difficult.

The principal of the college, Augustin Fortin, has been arrested on charges of negligence following the collapse.
