BANGALORE: The government has decided to start the process of jammer installation (with the capacity of blocking 3G network) in the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail at a cost of `4.5 crore, and asked the Prison Department to take suitable action to curb the phone calls made to outside.
It must be remembered that Express had recently carried a news item on the telephone calls made to Pakistan from the Parappana Agrahara Prison premises. The government is in a dilemma over whether to give the project to government agency Bharat Elecronics Limited (BEL) or to invite tenders (May 20 and June 6 2011).

The government has decided to start the process of installation of jammers by inviting tenders. The prison department has requested the government to give the project to BEL as it has already installed jammers in Mysore Jail and also conducted a demonstration of jammers (with blocking 3 G network) recently. But the government now has decided to invite tenders, to help the government opt for better technology if more bidders participate in the tender.

When asked as to why the project was not given directly to BEL, he said that BEL can also participate in the tender process and we will opt for the better technology.

About the telephone calls made from the Parappana Agrahara jail to Pakistan, Auradkar said that other than installing jammers, other actions are also are being taken by the prison department. "Already city police have been asked to conduct surprise visit to the jail to check whether mobile phones are being used," he added.

He added that once the jammers get installed, the amount of such calls made will be automatically reduced by 80 to 90 per cent.
