New Delhi: In the ongoing confrontation on reservations for OBCs, the Union Government told the Supreme Court on Friday that it wants to move a plea to vacate the stay on the OBC quota.
This was stated by HRD Minister Arjun Singh after a two-day conference of state education ministers that ended on Thursday.
The Government is expected to tell the court that the 1931 Census was used not for identification of OBCs, but for a calculation of their population percentage. It is also expected to say that the quota is based on socio-economic surveys.
It will also argue that many colleges have already started admission processes in June with the new policy and if the stay is not vacated many students would lose a year.
The Supreme Court had on March 29 stayed implementation of the quota, saying the data were based on a 76-year-old census.
Earlier, a two member bench of the Apex court had questioned the method used to calculate the OBC population. The judges had even asked for a fresh caste-based census.
The stay has had a ripple effect on the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM).
The IIMs on Thursday deferred admissions for the 2007-2008 academic session till April 21. IIMs will not be able to increase seats to implement the quota if the government fails to solve the impasse.
