THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government, if needed, will bring in a new piece of legislation after discussions with the Opposition to overcome the High Court orders banning meetings on public roads, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the Assembly on Monday. The State Government was trying to soften the existing law, he said. The Advocate-General has also been asked to file a Special Leave Petition before the High Court, the Chief Minister said. The government will give special consideration to people against whom cases have been filed on the strength of the court order. The court orders will not affect the conduct of the annual Attukal Pongala, he said. In strictest sense, the Pongala does not fall within the ambit of the court order. It is not a deliberate attempt to obstruct the freedom of movement of any individual. Nor is it a gathering of people based on any ideology. The pongala is a coming together of families for a religious cause, he said.
