KOCHI: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday said that the government had revoked the decision to freeze land transactions in Goshree Islands. The decision was taken at the general council meeting of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) chaired by the Chief Minister here. Development projects for the islands worth Rs 142 crore was also approved at the meeting.The government had frozen land transaction in some of the islands falling under the jurisdiction of GIDA in the wake of the coastal highway project. “The government is yet to get the approval from the National Highways Authority of India for the project. However, it has been decided to revoke the decision in anticipation of approval,” Chandy told reporters after the meeting.The road between High Court junction and Goshree bridge will be renovated and beautified.The project is meant to be implemented in association with a non- government agency. The organisation that will be selected for carrying out the work has to implement the project at its own expense. The expense for the project can be met through advertisements and they will have the right for placing advertising on the road.The Rs 97-crore Moolampilly-Pizhala, Valiya Kadamakkudi-Chathanad Road, which comprises of three bridges, is one of the major projects that was approved on Thursday. “It has also been decided to implement projects for the overall development of Pullurkad, Thanthonnithuruth and Kurunkotta islands. The project will be implemented with the creative participation of residents,” he said.A solid waste treatment plant for Mulavukad island at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore was also approved at the meeting. “The plant, a pilot project, will have the capacity to treate six tonnes of garbage a day,” he said.The proposal for a water transport facility connecting the island with a terminal on Goshree-Chathyath road will also be implemented. “A double-decker boat will be acquired for the purpose and the terminal will be constructed on the 26 cents of land owned by the GIDA,” he said.District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, PWD Minister V K Ebrahim  Kunju, S Sarma MLA and representatives of panchayats in the islands took part in the meeting.
