New Delhi: Google is mulling over separating its photos service from its underperforming social network Google+, says a Bloomberg report citing people with knowledge of the matter. This move would make the photos service an independent product which will then be accessible to even users who don't have a Google+ account.
"The service, called Google+ Photos, would still work with the social network's users and may be rebranded as part of the move," says the report.
Google+ recently apologised and stopped requiring people to use their real names while mingling in the online social network, as it looks to gain ground on market leader Facebook.
Google+ marked the company's most concerted effort to catch up with Facebook Inc in the fast-growing social networking market, but it has struggled to match the popularity of the rival.
Google has increasingly sought to position Google+ less as a social networking "stream" that competes head-on with Facebook, and more as a means of establishing a unified "user identity" system to improve Google's various Web properties.
