With the hugely popular Ganesh festival approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is getting ready to play its part not only to ensure that the festival is celebrated in a nature-friendly manner but also to make sure that devotees perform it in the most traditional and authentic manner.
GHMC commissioner MT Krishna Babu on Wednesday said the corporation would provide open spaces for manufacture, sale and distribution of clay Ganesh idols. He also promised to provide saplings of all 21 medicinal plants that are used for the worship of the elephant god through the Andhra Pradesh Medicinal & Aromatic Plant Board. What’s more, he said the GHMC would be planting the medicinal plants in the municipal parks. Further, the civic authorities would also be supplying dyes for Ganesh idols, through sponsors, to different schools which take up idol-making.
The commissioner explained the preparations for the coming Vinayaka Chavithi at a meeting with representatives of non-government organisations involved in promoting clay Ganesh idols at the GHMC head office here on Wednesday. He said the places selected for idol-making should be litigation-free and they should be finalised only in consultation with local corporators and Residential Welfare Associations (RWAs).
The commissioner said nearly 12 lakh clay idols would be needed and requested the NGOs to spell out how many idols each of them could make so that an action plan could be drawn up for their distribution.
The government is spending around Rs 370 cr to clean Hussainsagar of pollution caused by STP plants, sewerage lines and immersion of plaster of Paris Ganesh idols. Use of clay idols would help keep pollution under check to some extent, he said.
