The BBMP Council on Tuesday passed a resolution to enhance the garbage collection by operating a second shift. The resolution also stressed on hiking tender amount by 20 per cent to the garbage contractors.
During the discussion, Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy and councillors, cutting across their party lines, came down heavily on zonal joint commissioners and others. The garbage tender was not finalised and it was dragged to the court. Following the direction from the court, the BBMP has to finalise the contract amicably. However, it is yet to arrive at a decision on garbage tender.
JD(S) leader Thimme Gowda, ruling party leader N Nagaraju, Basavanagudi councillor Katte Satyanarayana claimed that citizens were blaming the BBMP and the area councillors for not clearing the garbage.
While Satyanarayana demanded a reply from all joint commissioners on the measures taken on the garbage disposal, Hanumanthanagar Councillor K Chandrashekhar said, “If we are spending Rs 350 crore on bills to the contractors, how is it possible to see the garbage everywhere? This shows, the BBMP has failed in clearing garbage,” he said.
The Mayor urged Commissioner to suspend the officials, if they fail clear garbage. The officials claimed garbage disposal has now become a challenging task due to the closure of the Mavallipura landfill.
