With the arrest of four persons, the police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of auto-lifters active in Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad.
The accused have been identified as Ajit, Naveen, residents of Ghaziabad, Rajkumar and Monu, both residents of Bulandshar district, all aged between 22 and 30 years.
The police said they have recovered 17 stolen bikes, three scooters, a car, two country-made pistols, three live cartridges and two knives from their possession.
"Acting on a tip-off that some wanted auto-lifters were coming towards Teela Crossing in Sahibabad area last a trap was laid. Up on seeing us approach them, all the accused began firing at police personnel. However, we managed to nab the four accused," a senior police officer said.
The police said the accused used to steal bikes, cars from Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad and sell them after removing the number plates.
"Police are now interrogating them about hideouts of their accomplices, who would be arrested soon and further investigation is on," an officer added.
