An idol of Lord Ganesh installed at Jeeva Nagar, as part of the on-going Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations, was damaged in a fire early on Thursday morning. Police said the fire was caused by sparks from the arc light used to illuminate the idol.
No one was injured in the incident but the fire destroyed the entire pandal. The idol was installed by activists of an autorickshaw drivers’ union.
Police pickets have been posted in the area as a precautionary measure.
The Vinayaka Chaturthi festivities began in the Union territory with much fervour. Special pujas were held at many other temples including the Manakula Vinayaga Temple. The festival would continue for five days, after which clay idols of Lord Ganesh would be immersed in the Bay of Bengal.
