Chandigarh: Talking on mobile phones frequently and for a long duration by a woman is one of the causes of discord between newly married, opines chairperson of the Punjab State Commission for Women Gurdev Kaur Sangha.
The Punjab State Commission for Women has circulated an advisory for married women, saying they should stop using cell phones.
Gurdev Kaur Sangha believes the habit is ruining marriages because brides talking on the phone to their parents are misunderstood by her husband and in-laws, who believe she is talking to another man.
Sangha squarely blames cell phones for an increaseing number of divorces. The advisory said around 90 per cent of newly-married wanted a divorce as the family of the groom starts suspecting that the girl is talking to some other man with whom she has an extra-marital relationship.
"Mobiles are used by girls to call her parents to update on the happenings in her in-laws house and take parents' view on everything," Sangha said in Chandigarh on Thursday.
But some parts of the advisory are sensible - such as the bits asking brides to make small adjustments, and asking in-laws to treat newly-wed women as equals and as a daughter.
As per the advisory, just because the woman is talking on mobile phone it should not be construed as her having an illicit relationship with a man.
It takes at least two years for a marriage to work during which the newly-married woman should make "small adjustments" and not keep calling her parents, said the advisory.
Sangha said the advisory had been circulated due to increasing number of women seeking divorce.
