ADILABAD: D Pochanna, a daily wage labourer, was living at the railway station for the last 15 days because his hut on the endowment land was removed by the officials.Normally, he earns `120, but because of the cold wave, he was unable to go to work in the early hours.He could do only half day’s work and earning `60.Sometimes, even that is not available.With only one blanket to cover himself, he sits close to a fire during nights.“I cannot buy a blanket.If I do, I will have to go without food for the day,” he says.The cold conditions at Adilabad are so severe past one week that many people cancelled journeys and shops opened at 10 am and closed by 6.30 pm.Four people died because of the cold weather in the district.Under these hostile conditions, the homeless have been hit hard in absence of any night shelter in the town.Some of them are taking shelter at bus and railway stations, while others are spending the night on footpaths, covering themselves with blankets donated by charitable householders.Dinkar, from Uttnoor mandal, came to Adilabad driven by drought.He is looking for work as a daily wage labourer, but did not have any luck in the last one week.He is living with family near the bus station.“We go where work takes us.We do not have any permanent address,” said.
