Kylian Mbappe Set To Wear the Iconic No. 9 Shirt In Real Madrid Debut Season
Mbappe will follow in the footsteps of his childhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo, who was also given the No. 9 jersey after joining Real Madrid in 2009.

Kylian Mbappe is set to wear the iconic No. 9 shirt in his debut season at Real Madrid. The Spanish champions unveiled the new jersey numbers for the upcoming campaign via an official statement on July 10.

“Several Real Madrid players will change their jersey numbers at the start of the 2024/25 season,” the club wrote on its official website. Mbappe will follow in the footsteps of his childhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo, who was also given the No. 9 jersey after joining Real Madrid in 2009.

The Portuguese superstar, however, later switched to his favourite No. 7 that he first wore during his Manchester United career and has now become iconic for him. Now, Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr continues the legacy of Ronaldo at the Madrid-based club, wearing the legendary jersey number 7.

Before Mbappe, another Frenchman Karim Benzema had donned Real Madrid’s No. 9 shirt for over a decade. The Ballon d’Or winner left the Spanish capital to join Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad last summer.

No Real Madrid player had the privilege to wear the No. 9 jersey during the 2023-24 campaign. Mbappe will now take it over, having secured his dream transfer to Real Madrid from home club Paris Saint Germain. The World Cup winner used to wear the classic No. 10 at PSG.

Real Madrid have changed the shirt numbers of a few more players for the next season. Uruguayan star Fede Valverde will now take charge of the No. 8 jersey, succeeding Toni Kroos, who took his retirement after winning the Champions League last season. Meanwhile, Aurelien Tchouameni has been given the No. 16 jersey, which was previously worn by legendary midfielders Casemiro and Xabi Alonso.

“Camavinga, who until now wore the number 12, will change to 6. Valverde will change from 15 to 8 and Tchouameni will move from 18 to 14. Arda Guler, who wore the number 24 last season, will wear 15 and Vallejo will wear the number 18,” Real Madrid revealed in the statement.

Speaking of Mbappe, the French striker will now shift his focus to club football after losing the EURO semi-final to Spain. He has joined Real Madrid as a free agent, signing a five-year deal worth 15 million euros per year.
