The Jal Satyagraha against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) came to an abrupt end on Friday afternoon following the death of a fishermen who suffered grievous injuries after falling from a jetty during Thursday’s protest.

A PMANE member said that Sahayam (38) of Idinthakarai was taking part in the sea satyagraha on Thursday when he accidentally fell from a jetty due to vertigo he suffered as a Coast Guard craft passed by at close proximity. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Nagercoil where he died on Friday afternoon. Sahayam is survived by his wife, three daughters and a son.

On Friday morning, CPM MLA Annadurai met the protestors at St Lourde Madha Church at Idinthakarai. After the meeting, the villagers headed towards the sea near St Xavier’s Church and resumed their protest in the sea.

Around 1.30 pm, the news of Sahayam’s death reached the protestors who immediately stopped the agitation. Then they went on a silent procession holding aloft black flags.

PMANE leader M P Jesuraj told Express that the organs of Sahayam were donated after his death. “As the police declined to register an FIR based on our complaint that the death was caused by the low-flying Coast Guard craft, we refused to receive the body. After sometime, the police registered an FIR based on our petition. We are not going to demand compensation for Sahayam’s death, but all that we need is stoppage of fuel loading at KKNPP,” he added.
