HYDERABAD: Kuruva Mallesh (28) had sensed an opportunity in the ongoing RTC strike as have many autodrivers in the twin cities. He had been hitting the roads in the wee hours ever since the strike began to make the most of it so that he could earn a few extra bucks for his family- a fiveyearold daughter, an 11monthold kid and wife.
The autodrivers' strike, slated for Sept 24 and 25, too was on his mind. On Wednesday morning, he jumped into his threewheeler fairly early around 7.30 a.m at his residence in Jhansinagar, Road No 9 near Filmnagar.

Just as he expected, he got an early morning passenger and earned a few bucks but his luck ran out within minutes.

K Radha (25), his wife, was inconsolable. Waiting at the Gandhi Hospital mortuary for her husband's body, she said, "We have an 11monthold boy and a fiveyearold daughter Maheswari. My husband wouldn't have gone early but for this strike. He never used to go to work so early."

A Rajendhar, the driver's cousin, said Mallesh was a softspoken man.

What's your reaction?
