Did Congress candidate and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi's son Amit misrepresent his date of birth to obtain a government certificate? Now, as Amit Jogi prepares to fight the coming Assembly elections, there's a controversy over his date and place of birth. Documents with CNN-IBN show that Amit Jogi had misrepresented facts about himself on multiple occasions.
In his application for registration as a citizen of India on December 15, 2001, Amit Jogi said he was born on August 7, 1977 in Dallas Texas in USA. A year later in August, 2002, when Amit Jogi applied for a Chhattisgarh Domicile Certificate, he claimed he was born on August 7, 1978 at Pendra village in Bilaspur. On the basis of this form, the Raipur collector issued a certificate the same day affirming his place of birth as Chhattisgarh.
There are more such instances. In August 2004, Amit Jogi applied for a Schedule Tribe certificate and in that he said his date of birth was 1977, same as his application for citizenship, but his place of birth was Bilaspur instead of Texas and on this basis a certificate was issued.
With elections around the corner, the Bharatiya Janata Party has lapped on to the issue. With an embarrassed Congress promising a thorough investigation and the BJP not willing to let go of it, the issue is bound to remain in the electoral space in days to come.
What remains unanswered is how Amit Jogi benefitted by reducing his age and changing his place of birth.
