MYSORE: 88-year-old G J Mannur Gurappa has added a new dimension to the art field by creating a four dimension work titled ‘Light Effects on Colour’ by giving external light and sound effect. The paintings look different when the lights are turned on and off.  Aptly named ‘Light Effects on Colour,’ at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, it looks normal till  the lights are turned on, captivating viewers.  He has used three bulbs which show a thunderstorm,  and reflection of the DC’s office in the rain water collected at oval grounds. With the  lighting work just completed, Gurappa is  concentrating on giving appropriate sound effects. So far, he has done 51 three dimension paintings and sold two of them to art connoisseurs in France and Germany and donated most of the others to the University of Mysore. Apart from being a creative artist, he is also good at writing and has penned six books, some of which have bagged awards. “I took up art seriously after taking voluntary retirement in 1975 from the Department of Agriculture. Initially, I worked only on two dimensions and later started giving light effects for them. This four dimension work with sound is my unique work,” he says.“Visualisation and appropriate colour combination are needed to create a picture with sound and light effect. In my paintings, I have tried to convey a message to the populace,” he said.About His WorkHe sketches the painting on a drawing sheet and fills it with colours. He fixes the painting inside a wooden box and provides lighting effect based on the virtue.
